Update on Dark Tower Movie Cast and Plot

dark tower arts_gunslinger1It has been a long way, but meanwhile it is clear that the Dark Tower Movie will finally become real. Here’s an update on the few latest facts and rumors:

The movie title will be “The Dark Tower – The Gunslinger”, directed by Nikolaj Arcel. The book is written by Akiva Goldsman and Anders Thomas Jensen. Producers comprise Akiva Goldsman, Brian Grazer, Ron Howard, Erica Huggins, Stephen King and Jeff Pinkner. Besides Sony Pictures Entertainment and Media Rights Capital, Imagine Entertainment and Weed Road Pictures joined the circle of production companies.

The release date is planned for 17 February 2017. In few weeks, filming will start in South Africa. However, only few cast members are officially assigned, still unclear how will play Susannah and Eddie, if they are in the first movie anyway:

Idris Elba … The Gunslinger/Roland Deschain
Matthew McConaughey … The Man in Black
Abbey Lee … Tirana
Tom Taylor … Jake Chambers

Some speculations indicate that the chronology of the first Dark Tower movie will be different to that from the books and the plot will focus on the relationship between Jake and Roland, suggesting that Eddie and Susannah maybe will not be casted until the second movie is set up.

Since there is not much time left, we probably will have exciting news to come soon! We will keep you updated.

New Rumors About the Dark Tower Movie Cast

Some days ago, Deadline.com reported that actor Idris Elba currently is strongly considered to play Roland Deschain in the upcoming Dark Tower movie adaptation by Sony/MRC.  Just some days before, some other rumors spread about Matthew McConaughey to play Roland (or maybe the Man in Black). After all, considering all the previous discussion about who will finally play the Dark Tower Movie lead role, it remains absolutely unclear who will be the final “Roland Deschain”.  We still can only discuss, speculate and wait for the final word.

In addition, recent reports make clear that if and when a Dark Tower Movie Adaptation will be  produced by the current team (Sony, Media Rights Capital, Ron Howard, Akiva Goldsman, Brian Grazer), also is not set in stone. Despite Sony already having announced an official start date (January 2017) for the first motion picture, Ron Howard in a recent interview said that the final decision about the project has not been made yet.

Taken together: Nothing clear yet, we can stay excited if we ever will see Dark Tower movies on the big screen.

The Dark Tower Movie and TV Series Now Revived at Sony

the gunslinger book coverGood news for everybody who finally wants to watch the Dark Tower on the big screen: According to an exclusive actual report from Deadline.com, Sony Pictures will team up with MRC to co-finance the Dark Tower movie adaptation. The first movie will cover the first Dark Tower book, The Gunslinger. In parallel, a complementory TV series will be developed by Media Rights Capital.

The new script, drafted by both Akiva Goldsman and Jeff Pinkner, was totally reconceived from the first version that previously was developed when Universal and later Warner Bros were still in. The team will further comprise Ron Howard, Brian Grazer, Erica Huggins, and, most likely, Stephen King himself as producers.

The first movie will be primarily based on the first book of the Dark Tower Series, The Gunslinger, and focus on the relationship between Roland and Jake. The film will be “a blend of horror and fantasy”.

Deadline’s article also mentions that “Numerous stars including Javier Bardem and Russell Crowe have eyed the role of the gunslinger, but that role won’t be filled until after the director is set”.

It also includes a statement of Stephen King himself, who sold the options for his works for $1 several years ago and “has been incredibly patient as this mammoth project — it’s his answer to Tolkien’s Middle Earth novels — has taken its time and its twists and turns. He’s sparked about where the project is now.”:

“I’m excited that The Dark Tower is finally going to appear on the screen,” he said in a statement. “Those who have traveled with Roland and his friends in their search for the Dark Tower are going to have their long-held hopes fully realized. This is a brilliant and creative approach to my books.”

Citation from Said Rothman:

“There are few projects out there that compare with the scope, vision, complex characters and fully drawn world that Stephen King has created with The Dark Tower. I am a giant fan. And, as Stephen himself does, we love the direction that Akiva and Jeff have taken. This is a great opportunity for a director to put his or her stamp on a cool global franchise.”

If you ask me, this all sounds very, very promising, since Sony has both the money and the capacity to finally take the Dark Tower to the big screen, and MRC is a good partner to produce the tv show. However, we had good news often enough through the last years, and until now all of them turned out to be unsuccessful. So let’s just wait where this leads and stay patient.

New Rumors about the Dark Tower Movie

Two new little  pieces of news referring to the Dark Tower movie project were spreading in the internet in recent days:

First, in an interview done for Ain’t It Cool News with Aaron Paul, he was asked about his interest with the Dark Tower. His reply:

I’ve had a ton of meetings on that. I just had a general sit down with Ron Howard, who is a huge fan of [Breaking Bad], which is such a crazy thing to even think that Ron Howard even knows who I am. They’re definitely planning on making it.

Second, the website Schmoesknow.com reported that Ron Howard is still planning to do the project with MRC. They also speculate that next to the movie there will be a TV series which finally might end up at Netflix. They further mention that Liam Neeson is interested to play the role of Roland Deschain.

So, that’s all possibly just rumors, and only time will tell if there is any substance in that.
