Abbey Lee is not the Femal Lead in the Dark Tower Movie

Recent reports from Deadline.com stated that Abbey Lee will be the female main character “Tirana“ in the upcoming Dark Tower Movie. Eric Vespe („Quint“) now reported on aintitcool.com that her role in the movie will just be minor. Mentioning “Tirana“ to be a lead character in the first Dark Tower Movie has led to some confusion before: The character is  a servant of the Crimson King and only appears shortly in the seventh Dark Tower book. Now, Abbey Lee apparently will have a cameo in the Dark Tower Movie as “Tirana”. Not a female lead at all, but it still remains unclear why this character appears in the first movie that early in the story.

At the begin of March 2016 it was reported that the Dark Tower Movie will be realized with Idris Elba as Roland Deschain, Matthew McConaughey as the Man in Black and Tom Taylor as Jake Chambers. Sony announced that the Movie will head to theaters in February 2017, and filming should begin in 7 weeks from then. This would be already in around 2 weeks! But still, we don’t know much more details about the movie yet. However, recent statements from Eric Vespe on ainitcool.com are in line with some of the confusion seeded by casting characters like Tirana from the seventh book of the saga for the first movie. He reported that the movie will focus mainly on the relationship between Roland and Jake and contain parts from at least book three and book one. This means the chronology of the story we know from the books will be changed massively for the movie adaptation. Continue reading Abbey Lee is not the Femal Lead in the Dark Tower Movie

dark_tower_coverAs reported by Variety.com, Matthew McConaughey was offered by Sony and MRC to play a lead role in the upcoming Dark Tower movie adaptation. According to some reports, he will be able to decide if he wants to play the role of the gunslinger Roland Deschain, or Randall Flagg (The man in black). However, nothing seems to be decided yet.

Futher first facts about the upcoming Dark Tower movie adaptation:

The script was written by Akiva Goldsman and Jeff Pinkner. The adaptation will be produced by Akiva Goldsman, Brian Grazer, Ron Howard and Erica Huggins. Jeff Pinkner will be executive producer. The movie series will be distributed by Sony, along with a TV series produced in parallel by MRC.

The Dark Tower Movie and TV Series Now Revived at Sony

the gunslinger book coverGood news for everybody who finally wants to watch the Dark Tower on the big screen: According to an exclusive actual report from Deadline.com, Sony Pictures will team up with MRC to co-finance the Dark Tower movie adaptation. The first movie will cover the first Dark Tower book, The Gunslinger. In parallel, a complementory TV series will be developed by Media Rights Capital.

The new script, drafted by both Akiva Goldsman and Jeff Pinkner, was totally reconceived from the first version that previously was developed when Universal and later Warner Bros were still in. The team will further comprise Ron Howard, Brian Grazer, Erica Huggins, and, most likely, Stephen King himself as producers.

The first movie will be primarily based on the first book of the Dark Tower Series, The Gunslinger, and focus on the relationship between Roland and Jake. The film will be “a blend of horror and fantasy”.

Deadline’s article also mentions that “Numerous stars including Javier Bardem and Russell Crowe have eyed the role of the gunslinger, but that role won’t be filled until after the director is set”.

It also includes a statement of Stephen King himself, who sold the options for his works for $1 several years ago and “has been incredibly patient as this mammoth project — it’s his answer to Tolkien’s Middle Earth novels — has taken its time and its twists and turns. He’s sparked about where the project is now.”:

“I’m excited that The Dark Tower is finally going to appear on the screen,” he said in a statement. “Those who have traveled with Roland and his friends in their search for the Dark Tower are going to have their long-held hopes fully realized. This is a brilliant and creative approach to my books.”

Citation from Said Rothman:

“There are few projects out there that compare with the scope, vision, complex characters and fully drawn world that Stephen King has created with The Dark Tower. I am a giant fan. And, as Stephen himself does, we love the direction that Akiva and Jeff have taken. This is a great opportunity for a director to put his or her stamp on a cool global franchise.”

If you ask me, this all sounds very, very promising, since Sony has both the money and the capacity to finally take the Dark Tower to the big screen, and MRC is a good partner to produce the tv show. However, we had good news often enough through the last years, and until now all of them turned out to be unsuccessful. So let’s just wait where this leads and stay patient.
